Reflection

I wanted to wait and get home to write my final blog about one of the best experiences of my collegiate career. My roommate picked me up from the airport (she is also ADPi!) and wanted to know all the great stories I had to bring home with me. As I tried to describe my feelings about Convention, I found it hard to put into words the intangible things I witnessed this weekend. However, I did my best.

After the Awards Banquet last night, the most beautiful scene you can imagine was 500+ sisters side by side, standing outside the ballroom, adorned in formal attire, singing our most cherished songs. We sang in one accord and the songs were sung heavenly!! I almost had chills as we all stood there and closed out our final moments together before we said goodbye. 

I would have to say my "favorites" from last night were the traditions of the final banquet. I was honored to give a toast to our founders and our country with my chapter's cup. Also,  I was humbled to carry Epsilon Tau's Golden Lion flag which is a symbol of years of dedication and commitment to the highest principles of membership. Walking down the center aisle toward the beautiful stage filled with silver awards, I knew I walked for my sisters at home. 

Before we went to sing songs, we shut out the lights and began the Candlelight Roll Call. Seeing every chapter's light come on, it reminded me of a statement that one of the award-winning alumna said..."Alpha Delta Pi is the light in my soul." This sentiment is certainly shared by women internationally and it was evident in our final moments spent together at Convention. Not only did it remind me of that sentiment, but also it reminded me of that day back in May as Eugenia's candle burned with a "steady glow"...so did our own lights last night. From 1851 to now, Alpha Delta Pi has shined brightly because of strong women dedicated to a common purpose.

In closing I will say...goodbye for now, because I plan to be at Convention 2011 in PHOENIX!

Final Thoughts

I am home from Convention and I finally have a chance to sit down and share my final thoughts. It was such a wonderful week spending time with all of my sisters!

Last night was a great evening and congratulations to all of you that were honored with awards. My favorite part of the evening was the final roll call. As each chapter name was called, members of that chapter stand and light a small pen light. In the end everyone is standing and the room looks amazing with all of the lights!

This week was long and I was definitely exhausted when I arrived home, but I would not trade this experience for the world. We listened to wonderful speakers, participated in ritual, attended business meetings, shared meals with our sisters, and we even had a chance to spend some free time in Orlando. The week flew by quickly and the 158th Grand Convention is now part of Alpha Delta Pi history.

I would personally like to thank all of you for making my week in Orlando wonderful! A special thank you to all of my District IV sisters, especially Gina, Katie and Christy who made my week extra special! Congratulations to the Beta Tau House Corporation, the Akron Area Alumnae Association and the Beta Tau Chapter for winnning the most prestigious Alpha Delta Pi Awards- House Corporation Excellence, Alumnae Association Pi Pride and Golden Lion! I am so proud to be a member of these wonderful groups and I am ever prouder to be a sister in Alpha Delta Pi!

"We experience the closeness only sisters can know."

While sitting at the airport this morning, I am reflecting upon my experiences at Convention and most prominently is the events of last nights dinner and how it has truly touched my life.

Yesterday began with a ritual review session open to all members of Convention. The time was very informative and it is always a pleasure to watch grand council perform our sacred ritual. We then went straight into a speaker on responsibility and not being a bystander. The speaker helped to empower us all to take action in our lives whether it be within our chapters, families, or any circumstance.

Following the speaker we had a Panhellenic luncheon led by Katherine Petty Gottard. The luncheon was such a great display of our pride in being members of Panhellenic and the 100th anniversary of our membership in NPC. There was a parade of flags displaying each sorority which were members of NPC and a speaker from the NPC council who was a member of Delta Delta Delta. The luncheon proved to me even further why it is so important to have good Panhellenic relations. We are a strong organization as Alpha Delta Pi's but we are even stronger as members of the National Panhellenic Conference.

Following lunch there were several workshops available for Convention members to attend at their will. I chose as my first workshop to attend the TME session. This session helped me to reinforce the ideals and goals we strive for as a chapter. All of the TME session directors were very informative and passionate about relaying to us the importance of a strong TME program in our chapters.

I chose for my second workshop the recruitment marketing session. Having not directly worked with recruitment, this session was very informative. The directors explained how Alpha Delta Pi was a brand we need to protect and advertise whenever we have the chance. They spoke about methods of good "advertising" for our "brand" and I learned so much that I plan on taking back to my chapter in using to recruitment new women. After the workshops there was a break for a few hours before the final dinner that night. Some women enjoyed time by the pool while others headed off to their rooms for a nap.

With evening gowns, curled hair, and lots of eye shadow the main ballroom began to fill just as the hour approached 7pm. Members sat with their respective providence's. The dinner was a beautiful event. From the entrance of grand council and the beautiful display they sat in front of to the parade of golden lion chapters and light music, everything was perfect. There were so many special moments were the love of Alpha Delta Pi was without a doubt moving through everyone in the room. Toasting, the last call of the chapters and the thanking of Mrs.Gawltney for her dedication during Convention were among the many moving seconds we all experienced.

Perhaps some of the most thrilling moments during the final dinner was the announcement of awards. I came to Convention in the hopes that my chapter would receive the Stanard Award. At the 2007 Convention our chapter was up for golden lion and at the last moment there was one requirement we did not meet that kept us from receiving this award. Our dreams were crushed. Also during this year our previous Stanard Award reached its 6 year mark and we were no longer eligible for Golden Lion until we received the Stanard Award again.

The award presentations began with the giving of house corporation and alumnae awards. I sat anxiously, tapping my feet and shoulders clenched as I waited very impatiently. Then they began the chapter awards. First up was the Chapter Achievement Award. The names were called and each time the first word was Zeta, I became nervous. I sat straight up on the edge of my chair and clapped as each chapter was announced. They congratulated the final chapter receiving the Achievement Award and I relaxed for a moment. Next was the Chapter Excellence Award. I became even more nervous with the calling of this award because I knew this was the make or break point. I would be happy if we won Chapter Excellence because it is a wonderful achievement but I knew that if we did not win this award then there was a good chance for the Stanard award. As the chapter names were read I was counting the number of awards they still had to give away based on the amount of the silver pieces left. I waited and waited and waited for what felt like forever while they called names. And once again my heart jumped with each chapter that began with Zeta. When they called the final name and it was not my chapter, I looked to my advisor and providence director and smiled. I was hopefully and scared. Scared that we had not achieved any award at all and hopeful I was wrong.

They began to announce the names for the Stanard Award. I could see there were few silver plates being held by the district team directors and I became nervous. With my stomach dropped to an all time low I held by breath with each name called. "Zeta Psi, University of North Carolina at Greensboro!" They had said my chapter, my school! My advisor and I walked proudly to the front to accept the award and I was over come with pride and excitement. We had made our goal and not only was this a symbol of our hard word and dedication over many years but it was also an opportunity for the future for our chapter to once again have a shot at our first Golden Lion.

The winners of Golden Lion were then announced and we were very proud to have a chapter from our district- Middle Tennessee State University- receive this award for the first time.

With an array of pride, excitement, feelings of accomplishment and sincere gratitude I headed toward my room at the closing of the final dinner. This week has shown me the love that exist much deeper and long lasting than any other love I have known. The love of Alpha Delta Pi and the sisterhood I witnessed this week has forever changed my life. I cannot imagine my life now without Alpha Delta Pi. Having met some of the strongest most dedicated women I have ever had the pleasure to know, has called me to remember my sisterhood at home and how one day we will be alumnae. One day we will be wiser and well spoken. One day we will inspire others and have hilarious stories to tell. One day we will be what helps Alpha Delta Pi survive. Hopefully, one day we will be as lucky as those before us.

I wish you all safe travels home and I look forward to attending 21 Conventions myself one day!

To Thee Alpha Delta

First and foremost, congratulations to the incredible women who were elected and reelected on Friday to serve on Grand Council for the 2009-2011 biennium. We are proud and honored to have you lead Alpha Delta Pi.

Before dinner on Friday night, the collegians and alumnae (reminder: “ah-lum-knee”) whose organizations achieved Diamond 4-Point gathered for photos. This award was one my chapter always strived for but did not achieve while I was a collegian, so I was incredibly proud to accept the Diamond 4-Point award on behalf of my alumnae association. As the chapter presidents gathered for their Diamond 4-Point picture, I watched with pride and amazement at how many groups reached this goal.

The other amazing part of Friday was the Alumnae and Old Timers Dinner. Since this was my first Convention, I didn’t quite understand the hubbub about this event until I saw it for myself. What was truly incredible about this dinner was to hear about the decades of service given to ADPi by the alumnae who were honored. I was especially proud to know one of the award recipients personally (congratulations Pat Evans, our beloved Technology Committee Chair). The incredible dedication of the women who were honored is a tribute to the everlasting ties of sisterhood we have.

Even more incredible was the Diamond Awards Banquet on Saturday night. As a first-time Convention attendee (yes, I sat down very early in the Convention Song on Friday), I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. The parade of Golden Lion Award flags and display of silver awards onstage set the tone for an exciting night. As we progressed from the Achievement Awards to the Excellence Awards, the cheers grew. I was surprised and proud to be recognized for the Achievement Award, as well, on behalf of my alumnae association. The evening progressed and alumnae and advisors alike joined their sisters as the Stanard Leadership Awards were announced. Finally, we reached the award of all awards: the Maxine Blake Golden Lion Award. How exciting for the chapters who achieved this prestigious award which requires an astounding six years of hard work, excellence, and achievement! The evening closed with chapter roll, a friendship circle featuring favorite ADPi songs, and a Midnight Madness sale at Gift Mart.

It has been an exciting and exhausting week. I am, however, looking forward to returning home to get a jump start on the many great ideas we’ve gathered and share our pride of the Diamond 4-Point and Achievement Awards with our fellow alumnae in Washington, DC! Thank you to all of the sisters who spent this week with us and made my first Convention very memorable. I look forward to many more and perhaps someday being the last one standing at the Old Timers Dinner!

One final night...

Panhellenic Pride

Hello again sisters!

Boy the day has sure flown by quickly, but I'd have to say my favorite event was the Panhellenic Luncheon with our guest speaker, Eve Woods, Delta Delta Delta. She was inspirational to listen to and reminded us of a very true point. After we collegians graduate college, the likelyhood of us working with "all ADPi's" is very unlikely, however it is more realistic to be working with another Panhellenic women. Even though each of the 26 Panhellenic sororities have different rituals, mottos and symbols, we all share a common bond of sisterhood. Our value systems share some of the same beliefs and all work towards the same goals of bettering ourselves through our organizations and the community. I reflected on my own campus and my chapter's relations with other sororities on campus. If we all band together on issues that are important to us we can make a tremendous difference in our Panhellenic community. I look forward to putting these words to the test when school resumes in Fall semester.
I am extremely excited for the Diamond Awards Banquet tonight and looking forward to spending one last night with my new friends that I have made celebrating our chapter's accomplishments.

Final Day Festivities

Hey Sisters!

So, today started with our Initiation and Ritual Review, which I thought was just about one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. It must have been so special for those new members to be initiated in front of so many of their sisters from all over. Although, I personally would have been pretty intimidated, haha.

I hope everyone enjoyed Mick Dilbeck's speech and that everyone gets a lot out of his DVD program. At my school personally, the university sponsors something called Day of Dialogue, which gets the Greek Community together for a day, and this year's topic was bystander behavior, and they used Mr. Dilbeck's DVD, so it was really cool to see him again.

I hope everyone got some great things out of their respective workshops to take back to their individual chapters. I can't wait to share the things that I learned. I just hope I can retain it all until the end of summer and do our wonderful presenters some justice. :)

Now, everyone is taking a little two hour or so break before the final dinner. Hopefully, its restful, because it's going to be a long night. However, this dinner should be the best one yet, and we're all going to be looking so gorgeous in our formal attire!!!

I have had a wonderful week with all of you, and save travels on your way home tomorrow, wherever home may be!

Officers, Oldtimers, and Orlando!

Officers, Oldtimers, and Orlando! This describes our third day here at the beautiful Renaissance Sea World Resort! 

We began the day with our Second Business Meeting which involved such business as electing Grand Council officers as well as voting on courtesy resolutions. As they gave the Credentials Report, every woman could see that their vote was critical to the future of our sorority. The business meetings give you a chance to see what an impact you have on the next two years for Alpha Delta Pi.

After the business meeting, we were given free time in ORLANDO! I've heard about shopping trips, Disney and Sea World adventures, poolside talks, and some fun stories from women who stayed around the hotel. I think we all enjoyed the free time and the chance to get to know sisters from around the nation!

My favorite part of this third day was the Oldtimers' Dinner! Several alumnae were honored for their continued service to Alpha Delta Pi through the Diamond Circle Ceremony, Alumnae Achievement Awards, and the Joan Perry Boatwright Loyalty Awards. I remember as they read off each sister's accomplishments I listened in awe of their service not only to Alpha Delta Pi but their unselfish service to others. One of these outstanding women reminded us that our four years in college are just the baby steps...you're an alumna the rest of your life! These women who were honored are role models to me as I will graduate in a year and join their status as an alumna member. I hope and sincerely plan to serve as wholeheartedly as they have as a way of thanking Alpha Delta Pi for being such an impact in my life. I anxiously anticipate the years ahead!

Some other features of the Oldtimers' Dinner was the tradition of the Convention Song, Legacy Awards, and a Gift Mart Fashion Show! 

I am looking forward to tomorrows activities which include the Initiation and Ritual Review Workshop, Panhellenic Luncheon, workshops, and the Diamond Awards Banquet. I can't wait to learn more about the "Universal Appeal of Excellence"!

Alpha Delta Pi is truly for a lifetime...

Dear Sisters,

As I sat there this evening watching the numerous alumnae sisters being honored for their continued commitment to Alpha Delta Pi, I was truly in awe of their dedication to the First and Finest. Alpha Delta Pi women of their caliber inspire me to continue my involvement within the sorority and I hope they inspired all of those in attendance as well. My wish is that the collegiate members in attendance at convention this week truly understand that membership in Alpha Delta Pi does not end once you graduate from college and that they continue to be involved as alumna members of this sorority.

I feel that Mrs. Freeman said it best. She never thought there was an option to not get involved as an alumna member and I know I felt the same way when I graduated. Since graduating from college I have continued my involvement within Alpha Delta Pi as a member of an alumnae association board, an advisory board, and a house corporation board. You can make as big or as small a commitment as possible, but just do your best to make some sort of promise to stay involved in Alpha Delta Pi.

Ms. Kendrick recited the lyrics this evening and I would once again like to remind you that "Alpha Delta Pi is a sisterhood, you can trust in it always. You can have it for a lifetime, you can have it always."

Sisterhood as a Pi

Today started off with a second business meeting. This meeting was the election of officers for grand council. The meeting ran very smoothly and ended around 10am. It was scheduled to last until sometime around 12pm and Mrs.Gwaltney assured us that not every Convention runs as smoothly as this one has. I must say however that we were all very pleased that it did. So as the meeting closed, all Convention attendees were free until dinner at 7pm.

Everyone scattered after the business meeting. My roommate and some of her district sisters went to Disney and were elated they were going to be able to leave early enough to spend a good amount of time with Mickey and the gang. I decided to come back to my room and work a bit on homework for my summer session online class. But these big white beds have a magical effect when you lay in them and I drifted to sleep for an hour or so. The sun was peaking through the curtains when I woke. I finished my homework and changed for the pool. With a fresh new ADPi towel, courtesy of Gift Mart, I made my way down the elevator and towards the pool.

The pool here is really beautiful. It was nice to get out of the highly air conditioned conference rooms and spend some time in the warm Florida sun. After a few hours by the pool, the pool chair had the same effect as my bed. Basking in the warm sun, I drifted off to a nap for an hour or so. When I work it was 5:30 and time for me to get ready for the evenings dinner. Thankfully I didn't have any problems with my wardrobe when dressing for dinner and I headed downstairs promptly at 6:30 for a Diamond 4-Point Award photograph. I am very proud of my Zeta Psi sisters for working so hard and continuing to receive this award many years running.

Dinner this evening was a very special occasion. I sat with a few of my district sisters with some other nice women we had just met. Gift Mart put on a fashion show during dinner and it was full of entertainment. They even found a few guys to walk the cat walk that had been set up and a nice young man proposed to an alumnae member- very entertaining. He was such a good sport.

After we finished dinner there were several alumnae awards being given out. One of these honors was awarded to Martha Alexander. Mrs. Alexander is the mother of a Zeta Mu alumnae. My advisor, Connie, is also a Zeta Mu alumnae member. Connie is good friends with an advisor for Zeta Mu, Jamie, who is also a Zeta Mu alumnae. I have become very close with the two young women representing the Zeta Mu chapter here at Convention. As well as my Finance DTD when I was FVP last year is a Zeta Mu alumnae. With all of these connections through Zeta Mu it was amazing to feel some connection to such an amazing women as Martha Alexander. Her accomplishments over the years are immense and I know she has dearly touched all of the lives of the Zeta Mu alumnae members that I know.

One tradition that was continued tonight that cannot go on without being mentioned was the singing of the Convention song. This song is started with everyone standing and goes through the number of Conventions that have been attended by this years attendees. The song continued on from 1 to 5 to 10 to 20 with the winner having been to 21 Conventions! What an accomplishment and inspiration. Forty-two years of Alpha Delta Pi Conventions, now that is loyalty.

Tonight was a special night. As we joined together in honoring several alumnae members they spoke words of wisdom to each of us on the importance of Alpha Delta Pi in there lives. Seeing so many women who have dedicated their lives to being loyal to this amazing organization was truly special. I watched as these women laughed together, cried together and enjoyed themselves as they shared in remembering what brought them together in the first place- the sisterhood of Alpha Delta Pi. There friendships and life long commitments are an inspiration to me. Having only been a member for 2 years it really dawned on me as one alumnae spoke and said "most of your time in Alpha Delta Pi is spent as an alumnae member." Its true, more than ten times of your membership in Alpha Delta Pi is spend as an alumnae member. This made me realize just how important being an active alumnae is to the continued success and growth of ADPi. After all, it isn't collegiates that are starting new chapters or connecting our chapters internationally- its the alumnae. This is an inspiring thought and much of my success as a member of ADPi is due to the continued support of alumnae. Without them, ADPi would not exist. I hope I can be half as dedicated as an alum as the women who were recognized tonight.

Free Afternoon

Hey Sisters,
I hope you all have been enjoying your free afternoon. Whether you went to SeaWorld, Disney or Universal Studios, or wherever else, I hope you're spreading ADPi cheer all over Orlando!

Congratulations to all the newly elected and re-elected Grand Council members, and congratulations also to the chapters who got awards this morning.

I know we're all going to have a great time at dinner again tonight, so I can't wait to see you there!! Just make sure you all make the most of these last couple days in Florida with your sisters, because its almost over...

Falling in love with ADPi all over again!

Hello sisters!

I have not been able to get out of my head just how truly awe-inspiring the Adelphean Processional was this morning. Being able to partake in this ceremony that has been a Convention tradition since 1941 gave me chills- even at 7:30a.m.! I was honored to represent my chapter by having an active role and carrying our flag. As I was walking down the aisle and taking it all in, it made me fall in love with ADPi again.
I particularly liked hearing the story of the day our founders made their dream a reality again, as I have not heard it in awhile. Eugenia and the other founders were so into intricate details and wanted everything to be just right on their special day, which showed just how much thought they had put into it before they acted.
I then reflected on how we collegians are so busy in our daily school lives that we often just "go through the motions" instead of really thinking about what we are doing. During the business meeting today I thought about parlimentary procedure and how it is essential to keep my chapter running efficiently. During the Diamond 4-Point Awards ceremony for 10 and 25 year alumna's, I recalled on the amazing alumna, advisors, and international officer's my chapter and myself are fortunate to work with. I am grateful for their guidence and encouraging words of wisdom during my term as President, as they are an invaluable support system.
I'm looking forward to the rest of my convention experience and cannot wait to share my next learning experiences with you all!

From the "Frozen North" to the "Sizzling South"

Hello sisters!

I arrived from the “Frozen North” (District IV) yesterday afternoon and I am so happy to be here in beautiful Orlando, Florida! My name is Andrea and I am an alumna member from the Beta Tau Chapter at The University of Akron- Akron, Ohio. I currently serve as the Chapter Advisor for the Gamma Theta Chapter at Mount Union College- Alliance, Ohio. This is the 2nd Convention I have had the privilege to attend since joining Alpha Delta Pi in 1996. I know everyone has already shared many of the events that have taken place this week, so I will just share with you my favorite experience at convention thus far.

Following a short Province meeting on Wednesday evening, practice for the Adelphean Processional was held. I signed up to carry a flag for a dormant chapter in the processional and was assigned the flag for Epsilon Theta, West Liberty College- West Liberty, West Virginia. It was a late night with practice, but in the end I was definitely happy that I decided to carry a flag and I recommend doing this at least once if you ever get the chance. In turn, 199 collegiate chapter names were called along with the alumnae initiate chapter and we all marched in carrying flags representing each and every chapter including the 8 chapters that were colonized since we last met for Convention in 2007. During the practice and prior to the processional I had the opportunity to chat with some wonderful collegiate sisters. We spent time sharing stories about the chapters we serve and the areas of the country where we reside. It was a great time and carrying a flag in the Adelphean Processional was definitely a moment that I will never forget.

The first few days have flown by and I know the rest of the week will be the same. It has been great spending time with old friends and making new friends as well. For those of you who are at Convention I hope that you are enjoying the week thus far and for those of you who are not here in attendance I hope that you will have the opportunity to attend Convention at least once in your lifetime. It is unlike anything you will ever experience as a member of Alpha Delta Pi!

I can truly say that my sorority has made me the woman I am today and I am so proud to call myself an Alpha Delta Pi.

Walking toward History

Today, I would have to say, has been an amazing day. I really didn't know what to expect coming to Convention but it was the first thing I thought of when I was elected president. I knew I would have the opprotunity to come. Having been to districts and IMPACT, I had a small idea of how ADPi gatherings work, but I really had no idea about the experience I would gain here in Florida. I am only half way through this journey but the time I have spend in Convention so far has been amazing. I have truely enjoyed my time here in Orlando.

Its always a pleasure to stay in a nice hotel, have someone else clean your room and be served at almost every meal. But these are not the experiences that have been making my stay here in Orlando so amazing. What has been making this trip truely amazing is the history, pride, sisterhood and loyalty I can see in everyone here, everyday.

Today I had a funny expereience with the meaning "we live for each other." This morning, after only 5 hours of sleep, I pulled myself out of the bed. After showering and getting ready I was was at the final stages of preparing for the processional this morning. The processional is the event that I had been looking forward to the most out of this weekend. Being able to carry my chapter flag and represent Zeta Psi at the 168th Alpha Delta Pi Convention raised a great pride and joy into my heart. So with this pride I proceeded with getting myself ready this morning. I put on my freshly bought white dress. A dress that made me feel beautiful. I knew the moment I saw it that it was the one I would have to wear while carring my chapter flag. The only problem was, it wouldnt zip up all the way. This was not due to its improper fitting or a broken zipper. It just simply, would not zip. So time is rolling by, I am zipping the zipper up and zipping the zipper down with no luck. I called my advisor in a panic frenzie. As I started to sweat and really freak out, I knew I would be really mad at this "perfect dress" that I "had to have" if the zipper would be what stood between me and the processional. My advisor and another chapter advisor came to my room to resue me. After about 15 minutes and a few new ideas we managed to get the dress zipped and on! In that order! I cannot thank them enough for helping me. The processional was worth every bit of creativity we used this morning.

Walking into the offical start of Convention this morning, in an all white dress with white shoes, I felt honored. Sometimes as a president, people dont always see just how hard you work. And as a president, you know that its not important that they know everything you do for your chapter. But at that moment, I felt my hard word and dedication to Alpha Delta Pi was being recognized by everyone in that room. I felt honored, proud, encouraged and uplifted. The spirit in the room nearly brought me to tears by the time I took my seat. I am lucky to be a part of such an amazing organization and I knew this more than ever as I walked with my flag.

The history and pride in our past is so evident here at Convention. I believe this may also have been why I felt so uplifted this morning. Knowing that thousands of young women have passed through this outstanding organization and only handfuls had experienced such a beautiful ceremony as this. Just thinking of the Adelpheans in their white dresses announcing the creation of the first sceret society for women connected me more to Alpha Delta Pi's past than ever before.

"You ARE History"

As I am looking through our schedule for tomorrow, I am interested to check out the "You ARE History" workshop. I think that is why we are here and what Grand Convention is all about. During the Adelphean Processional and Formal Opening today, you could see how we are brought together through the words our sisters wrote many years ago. Those words, ideals, and rituals have stood the test of time. I think that is where the "universal appeal" theme is intertwined as well. Our diamond-shaped badge represents attributes that are eternal and  sought after. The same ideals of character that our founders valued are invaluable today, over 100 years later. 

My favorite part of the Formal Opening was when the Leadership Consultants read the stories about our founders. The images I thought of when I heard the stories were so vivid. When they talked about how our founders took special precaution to preserve our ritual, I could look around a room and see hundreds of other women who have guarded this same thing. It is something I could share with the Chapter President sitting beside me as well as the International Grand President sitting before me. 

Our first business meeting was professional and well-prepared. Therefore, it ran efficiently and we were able to accomplish a great deal in a small amount of time. I was also excited to go to my first District Caucus and even more excited to see one of my Chapter Advisors get elected as the Nominating Committee Member! 

At the Foundation Luncheon, we had the privilege of hearing a message from Ainsley Earhardt, a Fox News correspondent (my favorite network! ). She encouraged us to dream big and reminded us to remember that "you can control 2 things: your character and your reputation." I am honored to call such an outstanding woman my sister!

I ended tonight by attending the So, You Want To Be a Leadership Consultant? session. It was enlightening to hear my sisters' stories from when they traveled and their tips for aspiring consultants. I hope to meet some more leadership consultants this week and get more information about such a rewarding experience!

After our Second Business Meeting tomorrow we have FREE TIME!! I think we could all use a little bit of that in such a beautiful city!

The Beginnings of Grand Convention

Hey Sisters,

The Adelphean Processional this morning was such a special thing for all the chapters. It was really well organized and every chapter got to have their moment of recognition at the convention. The memorial service was also very beautiful. It's very sad, of course, that so many people have to die, but it is also nice to remember them at their best and hope that one day people will say the same wonderful things about us.

The business meeting was really well organized too, and I know everyone enjoyed getting things over with a little bit early. For those sisters that couldn't be here, all the amendments and resolutions were passed!!

I would like to congratulate all the chapter, alumnae associations, housing corporations, etc., who received awards today. You all do such a great job at representing the ideal image of Alpha Delta Pi.

Tomorrow is going to be sooooo much fun with the Grand Council elections and our FREE AFTERNOON!!! Rest up sisters, the week is so not over.

We Laugh and Live for Each Other

Said in the invocation for the formal opening, the subject line became a living statement for me last night at the end of the processional practice. Originally scheduled to end at 11:15, practice had turned into a very typical ADPi event (at least at my chapter): late. It was 11:45, we were tired, and we had to be back, in our places and ready to go by 7:15 this morning. With any other group of women, there would have been complaining, grumbling and I would have been cranky and ready to get to bed, but last night, just as we finished practicing our processional, our fearless leader stood up to give us updates. I don't remember exactly what she said, but whatever it was, it made me laugh. And immediately I thought: you know, sometimes meetings can get long, practices can be tedious, but these woemn that I call sisters make everything worth it. We truly do laugh and live for each other.

I've had the same feeling over and over again today, throughout the flag processional, the business meeting, the luncheon, and District Caucauses. The day started early, with the chapter presidents gathering outside the business hall at 7:15 for the Flag Processional. Dressed in all white, with our blue ribands, we turned the hallway into a bustling breakfast room, last minute make-up powderroom and, of course, a talking zone. Once the Processional started though, I understood why this is such an honored part of Convention. I'm lucky enough to be from a single-letter chapter, and as I turned into the row of flags for my walk to the business hall, I was struck by how many colleges, campuses, and women the flags represented. It's easy sometimes to forget that by joining Alpha Delta Pi, you join an organization much bigger than your chapter; but it's hard to forget that once you've participated in the Flag Processional. If you get a chance, you should look at the pictures from this morning, taken by the Alphaean photographer.

After the formal opening, we all filed out to the lobby for the convention photograph, where we quickly attracted the attention of most of the other hotel guests. We even became one families morning entertainment as the mother, father, grandmother, daughter, brother AND baby all came out onto their balcony to wave hello.

The highlight of my day, though, came at lunchtime, as we had the opportunity to learn from Ainsley Earhardt, the Foundation's Keynote Speaker. Ainsley shared memories from her time in college, but more importantly, how the lessons she learned as an ADPi have helped her in her life as a journalist. She stressed to us the importance of being yourself and finding your personal passions in life. I was struck by her wisdom, humor and her comfort with herself. And her pride in being an Alpha Delta Pi.

Alpha Delts Forever Wearing White and Blue

If you've never seen the Adelphean Processional, it is a sight to
behold. Everyone assembled this morning in their lovely white dresses.
In the fashion of the Adelpheans, each sister wore a blue ribbon
adorned with our motto and entered the opening session by district. It
was incredibly nostalgic and something every ADPi should experience at
least once in her life.

Now this part is truly amazing: we've been running ahead of schedule
all day. Most of us run on "ADPi time" when together (ranging from 10
to 30 minutes, I think, depending on the chapter). Our meetings were
so efficient that my roommate and I found time to check into the spa
for some much-needed pedicures this afternoon. Glorious! If you're
here enjoying Convention and haven't planned your Friday afternoon,
you might consider taking advantage of our 10% discount for one of
their amazing services.

Tonight brings a celebration of awards, as well as 10- and 25-Year
Ceremonies. And maybe just enough time to visit Gift Mart before dinner!

"We each have a place in this univserse."

As the subject line reads, each of us does have a place in this universe, stated by the impressive Ainsley Earhardt at today's luncheon during her keynote address. Today has been a great day full of tradition, conversations, learning, inspiration and bonding. The tradition started at 7:30 this morning when the flag bearers lined up for the opening ceremony. As I stood in the line proudly holding my chapter flag, I couldn't help but wonder how many people have held my flag before me? Granted I do realize with minimal research and a calulator I could find the answer to this quesiton pretty quickly, but the point is that Grand Convention is about tradition. This tradition has stood the test of time for 158 years and to me, that is pretty remarkable. For this reason, I feel extremely honored to have the opportunity to partake in this event.

Tradition aside, conversations and new friendships have taken place among so many of the participants here already. These conversations and friendships have acted as some of the main focal points of learning for me thus far . Another outlet that I have learned greatly from and been inspired by is our two speakers- Doug Hanson and Ainsley Earhardt. Both of these motivational speakers have accomplished so much already in their lives and serve as living examples that hard work and dedication do pay off. Ainsley Earhardt's speech today during lunch inspired me to take each opportunity I have while serving as Beta Upsilon's president to better myself and my chapter as a whole. It was encouraging to see a small town girl from South Carolina rise to a national news anchor on a huge television network at such a young age. Plus, I love seeing fellow ADPi's doing big things in the world like she is.

So for now, just remember her advice: we each get one chance to make it to the top. One chance to jump on the path to our dreams. Therefore, we must pay close attention to those around us and our surroundings to ensure that we don't miss our chance. Each interaction matters and you never know which conversation may chance your life forever. Think about it.

Travel to Traditions...Grand Convention is here!

Orlando's sunshine was quite the greeting as we arrived here at the hotel earlier today! The journey here has brought us all together to make the memories we will take with us as we depart...I can't wait! 

When we checked in today, we had a little free time so...first stop, GIFT MART! Of course! :)

After shopping around and checking out the vendors, it was time to get ready for our Pre-Convention Info session. This session was incredibly helpful clearing up questions we may have had about the Bylaw Amendments and Resolutions. I am looking forward to participating in the business aspects of Grand Convention and witnessing our voting process!

Next, we were all invited to a "Meet and Greet" with Grand Council. These women are sisters who go above and beyond and are a witness to the true spirit of sisterhood. I have always admired their selfless service to Alpha Delta Pi sorority and it is a privilege seeing them all around at Convention!!

At the Opening Banquet dinner, we were enlightened by an outstanding speaker, Doug Hanson! He was a dynamic speaker and spoke to us about having a "meta-MORE-phosis" of our life...expect more, become more, think more, feel more, and do more! I am thankful to the Foundation for providing these types of speakers and programming and for gifting each of us a copy of Doug's book! 

One of my favorite parts about the first night was preparing for the Adelphean Processional. As we waited to carry our flag, I realized what a special moment that is for each chapter! Countless chapter presidents and sisters have made that same walk and held those same flags. It is such an honor to be a part of this timeless tradition!

Well, its going to be an early morning...I better get some shut eye! I am looking forward to updating you tomorrow on all the fun things happening here in ORLANDO!

First Night in Florida

Good Evening Sisters!

I hope everyone is having a great time in Orlando so far and getting their Convention Week 2009 off to a great start.

Whether you got here early in the morning or later this afternoon, I hope you have had time to check out our beautiful hotel. It has a lot of cool little hideaways, like the cozy couch with canopy I am writing from right now.

Registration seemed to go very smoothly. Those volunteers sure know what they are doing, and I bet that can't be easy with 500+ of us running around here. By the way, does anyone else feel like we're the only people in this hotel? I mean, of course, I know we're not, but everywhere I go, I see more ADPi's than anything else, and it just seems like we've taken over. Haha.

I thought the business meeting orientation today went very efficiently. It was very straightforward. I think everyone realizes just how important the Bylaws amendments and resolutions are, and also how important it is to be at the business meetings, even if you aren't a voting delegate. And don't forget that some of the amendments are being bundled together. That will be important to consider when the time for voting comes.

The highlight of today was definitely, in my opinion, dinner. I thought I was starving, and I still couldn't finish what was in front of me. Although I've been told that some cultures consider it a compliment when you can't finish your food because it means you got enough to eat. Who knows? But it wasn't just the food that made dinner awesome. Doug Hanson was such a wonderfully upbeat and entertaining speaker. Virtual Violets to whoever arranged for him to be here. He was great.

I especially enjoyed the image he put on screen of the kitten with the lion's reflection. With Alphie as our mascot, I think that image really spoke to all of us ADPi's and got across the message that we all have so much potential, and all we have to do is realize it and put it to good use. Mr. Hanson had such amazing stories to share with us all, and just looking at his family seated at the table next to mine, I could tell that they all seem to lead very happy lives. So, maybe we can definitely learn a few things from him. I can't wait to read that book.

Well Sisters, it's getting late, and I think we all need a good night's sleep before tomorrow's festivities. I will see you all bright, early, and dressed in white tomorrow morning. In the words of Mr. Hanson, you are all very special and should live life to its fullest.

Do you see the light?

We have made it to Orlando! I haven't seen Shamu yet, but the fun has
just begun at the 158th Convention. Tonight's welcome banquet included
an entertaining and motivating presentation by Doug Hanson and a warm
welcome from our Florida chapters. Thanks also to the Greater Orlando
Alumnae Association for the delicious and adorable petit fours!

Sianaro Office Cubicle... Hello Orlando!

While I'm loving my summer internship, a little jaunt to Orlando for ADPi Convention sounded quite alright by me! Yesterday evening, I kissed my Southern Living cubicle goodbye and begin packing my bags.

You'll notice the magazines and book on my desk--don't worry, I snatched them up before I headed home. They made for delightful plane reading today.

I'm all registered and ready for tonight's festivities to begin. What's on tap? Well, first of all is a meet-and-greet with the officers of Grand Council followed by the Welcome Banquet. Whoohoo!

Grand Convention Begins!

Today I arrived in Orlando, FL for the 158th anniversary convention. When I walked into the doors of the Renaissance Hotel, I couldn't help but feel the excitement radiating from all my sisters around me. This is my first Grand Convention and I know that it will be amazing. So far I have just settled in and met as many sisters as I could. Dinner begins at 7:00 and I am looking forward to the kick-off of this great weekend. It is amazing how although we all come from different backgrounds and locations around the country, we are all able to immediately relate to each other through our common bond of sisterhood in Alpha Delta Pi. This weekend will be great and I can't wait to share all the wonderful things I learn from my fellow sisters while visiting the incredible Orlando, Florida!

Arriving in Orlando

We're finally here! When I started getting the emails about Convention in the beginning of April, it felt so far away. Even as I registered, received my information packets and read through the nominee profiles, I couldn't believe that it was drawing near. But now, here we are, settled into the Renaissance Hotel, preparing for the Welcome Banquet. Already, I can tell this is going to be a fantastic week of sisterhood and growing closer to my sisters from other schools. It's going to a jam-packed week, with days lasting from early morning to the late night, but I'm excited to share them with the sisters I meet in sunny Orlando. I'm actually off to meet Grand Council now with some of my great new friends!

Grand Convention Prep

With Grand Convention less than a week away, I am really starting to get excited. I have to admit that at least a little of my excitement is getting out of the office for a few days. But mostly I'm excited to finally attend my first Grand Convention more than ten years since my Initiation.

In addition to all of the "warm fuzzies" that Grand Convention fosters, it serves as the official gathering of our organization for elections and sorority business. This year, we have a number of Bylaw Amendments and Resolutions to vote on. Convention delegates will also be electing Grand Council for the 2009-2011 Biennium. Most of the nominees to Grand Council are incumbents running unopposed. However, the office of International President of Alumnae Membership has two candidates. Both women bring incredible experience and dedication to the office: experience as a Collegiate Province Directors, participation on ADPi committees, terms on chapter advisory boards, experience on house corporation boards, continued involvement with local alumnae associations, volunteering, and both received the Dorothy Shaw Leadership Award. Delegates, if you haven't had the opportunity to do so yet, you should review the nominee profiles and plan to "Meet the Candidates" during the session on Thursday evening.
